Cycling Name: King Cog – a lucky typo?
When not riding: I run, sleep and do some maths. And drink whisky…
Cycling history: I only learnt to ride a bike when I was 18 after my A Levels. My maths teacher taught me; as she said: I could not go to university and not ride a bike! After riding up the hills around Bath on heavy mountain bikes, I bought an old school road bike off eBay and cycled that for a while.
Cong isn’t short of support
A few years later, someone at work asked if I’d like to cycle to Barcelona with him. I said yes. Barcelona became Valencia as another teacher we knew lived there. Whilst on a training ride for the ride to Valencia, I decided that this bike was not going to take me all the way so I invested in my full carbon Boardman bike.
I rode with the Baroudeurs in November 2014 after Imdad noticed my water bottle. I almost died on that dark, cold Thursday morning 6am session with them, but I was hooked. And my whole outlook on cycling changed – in the past, cycling was just a mode of transport, now I just cycle for cycling sakes!
Best Cycling Moments: Apart from joining the Baroudeurs and when Lowell gave me the Baroudeurs cap and told me I’d earned it, cycling from London to Valencia has to be the best. The roads through France were amazing, the food we ate and the people we met were incredible. And to top it off, the little town just outside of Valencia where we stayed (Llaurí) was having a massive street party the day we arrived and we were local celebrities after the mayor(?) of the town gave us ‘kudos’ on the main stage!
Look out Rio!
