Jude’s first race at Hillingdon this morning, 8-10 year olds. Being Barouderus, he won it!
Under his smile and clear eyes, is the accomplishment of a brave young heart. Riding to the track, Jude passes an assessment test with flying colours. His reward? To ride and race with the largest youth-club in the country, the Hillingdon Slipstreamers.
Jude finds his spot on the starting line. He places his trainer upon the flat pedal. There’s no cleats for this racer. Bikes at the ready and the race is off! The laps go by with Jude burying himself each time. As they roll round the bend they disappear for a moment. It feels like a terribly long time and the suspense fills the air. Dad loses a breath for a second before Jude’s familiar frame returns to view.
He manoeuvres through the ranks without the help of a team, seeking out a gap. Jude takes the lead and rides towards the finish. As he approaches, he sits up not seeing the line is but a few metres further. A more experienced rider races to steal the race, but Jude eyes the chequered flag and kicks again. He wins!
Boy racing? No, says Dixon, “Good man! Our first win!”
