“Fly me to the moon
And let me play among the stars
Let me see what spring is like
On Jupiter and Mars
In other words, hold my hand
In other words, baby, kiss me”
– Composed by Bart Howard and made famous by Ol’ Blue Eyes himself.
It is a classic song that I find humming to myself quite often on a ride. Then along comes something to try and spoil the day. In this case it’s Critten Lane. More akin to some kind of lunar surface, I often wish that the aliens would replace it with crop circles instead. All the same, it is quite ironic that having a pleasurable ride from London to Surrey, there’s potholes galore to contend with slap bang in the middle of all this glorious country. But rather then let it get us down, a local has thought of a more enlightened way to look at things:
‘Is this what Fracking looks like?’
There’s more…
In a display of road celebration, or is it contempt for this quite country lane? Our artist has crafted several messages that make you sit up and smile.
Forgive me for the quality of the above image. It wasn’t because the picture was taken in transit; I actually stopped to take it, but if you’ve ever cycled down such an awful place, you too can’t help but laugh.
Twinning never looked so good
It isn’t that Critten Lane doesn’t possess what most good lanes have – peacefulness, charm, flanked either side by amazing countryside, with an abundance of grazing horses. More the fact that whoever is responsible for this tiny stretch of tarmac has not taken their responsibilities seriously.
And I guess that’s where the signage comes in. Why have a go, when having a go isn’t getting you anywhere, but even more holes? Why not just laugh at it and enjoy the ride?!
Chapeau Monsieur Artiste!
